"Quotidian Globalities"

A Lecture by Steven Flusty

Dr. Flusty is Assistant Professor in Geography at York University, Canada. His book De-Coca-Colonization was published by Routledge in the beginning of 2004. This lecture was part of the Geography Coffee Hour Series. Dr. Flusty's visit in Minneapolis was sponsored by the Institute of Global Studies, Space/Place Group, Department of Geography, and the Government of Finland/David and Nancy Speer Visiting Professorship in Finnish Studies.

"Pulp Architecture: A Movement in Progress!"

Filmmaker, writer, and architectural historian Roger Connah is based in Stockholm and Ruthin, North Wales, where he runs The Hotel Architecture Retreat and Resistance Center. He is Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington and author of numerous books, including 40/40 Young Architects from Finland (2002); How Architecture Got its Hump (2001); Aaltomania (200); Sa[l]vaged Modernism (2000); Grace and Architecture (1998); and Welcome to the Hotel Architecture (1998). The presentation was part of the Cass Gilbert Series and sponsored jointly by the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the Government of Finland/David and Nancy Speer Visiting Professorship in Finnish Studies.

Bittersweet Twist: The Films of Aki Kaurismäki

Two Pre-Screening Lectures by Markku Koski, January 28 and 30 at 7 pm.

Markku Koski is a free-lance journalist who specializes in cinema and popular culture. Koski holds a Master's degree in Communications and Sociology (University of Tampere, Finland). He is editor of the Finnish cinema magazine Filmihullu and lecturer at the Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Design in Finland. Koski has published several Finnish-language books on Finnish popular culture, including Olavi Virta (1878, with Peter von Bagh and Pekka Aarnio), Armin vuodet (1982, with Leo Linsten), Alemmat taiteet (1985), The Beatles (1986), Sorsa-diagnoosi (1989), Lööppikirja (2000, with Peter von Bagh), and Julkisia eläimiä (2001).

Filmmaker, writer, and architectural historian Roger Connah is based in Stockholm and Ruthin, North Wales, where he runs The Hotel Architecture Retreat and Resistance Center. He is the author of the book on Kaurismäki, titled K/K: A Couple of Finns and Some Donald Ducks (1991). His films include Take Five (1993), 27 Minute Lies (1994), Drive (1996), and Aaltomania (1996).
