Jukka Savolainen is a Visiting Associate Professor affiliated with the Department of Sociology. He is on a leave of absence from the National Research Institute of Legal Policy, the research arm of the Finnish Ministry of Justice. Prior to Minnesota, Dr. Savolainen has taught in Western Washington University and the University of Helsinki. He earned his Ph.D. in State University of New York, Albany.
Prof. Savolainen teaches classes in criminology, theory and methodology. Most of his research is focused on crime, violence, and criminal policy; often informed by a comparative cross-national perspective. In addition, Prof. Savolainen has published articles on sociological theory development, methodology, family studies, and art. He serves on the editorial board of the new peer-review journal Research on Finnish Society.
